Diving into Cuba’s history and seas

There is no better departure point than Cienfuegos, the Southern Pearl, to explore the beauty of the landscapes and the architecture but also to travel back in time towards the colonial history of the Island; a history profoundly marked by Spanish, French and other influences. Take for instance Trinidad, a city that seems to emerge out of the past. In the same route of traditions and culture, visit Santa Clara and Remedios. Saving the best for last, you can end this circuit at the keys located off the coast of Santa Clara, where the most amazing beaches and coral reefs await for you.

The most beautiful city of Cienfuegos has earned the nicknamed of “The Southern Pearl” in reference to its spectacular Jagua Bay, whose dimensions, depth and conditions offer unique, deep-blue landscapes.



French settlers exceptionally founded Cienfuegos – and Spaniards founded most of Cuban villages and cities – and thus it possesses a distinct neoclassical architecture and a grid-like layout of streets and avenues.

The best of the neoclassical spirit remains in palaces such as Blanco Palace and Goitizolo Palace, or the famous Terry Theatre and Palatino. Domes and semicircular vaults outline against the sky topping churches, public buildings, residences and the Gazebo at the centre of Park Marti, in the historical district, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2005.

Cienfuegos’ waterfront (Malecon) is an amazingly beautiful promenade where the city life and cultural events thrive. There you can visit the “Marti” Park and enjoy an animated conversation with the locals under a tree shade. For theater and musical shows you should visit the Terry Theatre. Not to be missed is the Provincial Museum featuring collections that portray the region’s history, art and architecture. After visiting the Cathedral, make a stop at the Fondo de Bienes Culturales (Craft Arts Fair) showcasing the excellent local craftsmanship. Other interesting museums are the Naval Museum and the “Hermanas Giral” Museum, dedicated to the lives of the sisters Giral who were part of the underground movement before the revolution.

Other places worth visiting in the city are the heritage cemeteries of Reina and Acea, the Casa del Fundador, the Palace of Valle – an outstanding example of French-influenced architecture. The beautiful Yaguanabo Valley with its
