One could say that Eastern Cuba begins in Las Tunas. Even though this land has an extensive history both aboriginal and colonial, only a few places have remained from the colonial past.
It was here though where the first Catholic temple was erected in Cuba, under the auspices of Alonso de Ojeda, infamous for his bloodthirsty cruelty.
Fires and other devastations have marked the history of this land, this explains the fact that historical and architectural monuments are scarce. The old mansion belonging to Vicente Garcia, the most important local military chief during the independence wars, did not escape the fate of the flames. It has been restored in the time and today it houses the Provincial Museum.
Las Tunas is then a fairly new city reflecting the social work, new infrastructures and efforts that have been made to modernize Cuba’s rural areas since 1959. In fact, Las Tunas is also known as the city of the many sculptures acknowledging the vitality of this artistic expression in the region.
