The city of Holguin (province’s capital) is located 734 kilometres east of Havana. The Spanish captain Garcia Holguin founded it in 1523 at the confluence of Jigue and Maranon rivers. The city treasures many historical monuments related to the independence wars as well as aboriginal archaeological sites.

Straight and narrow streets characterize the layout of the city, which also includes many plazas, both of religious and military origins.
Especially interesting is Loma de la Cruz giving access to the Cerro del Bramadero, where in 1790 a Catholic bishop erected a huge wooden cross. Today this hill can be reached by car or on foot climbing its 458 steps.
