A special mass and a popular fair take place there every May 3rd. “La Periquera”, former headquarters of the Spanish military forces in the region has endured the passing of time and today has been declared a National Monument.(Due to their multicolour uniforms the Spanish soldiers were nicknamed “pericos” – parrots).
Other places of interest are the Mirador de Mayabe, an outlook point in the outskirts of the city, overlooking the same-named valley. Mayabe is also the brand name of one of the best beers brewed in the island. Guardalavaca Beach, Esmeralda Beach and the Saetia Key are worth visiting as well as the community of Banes and the Museum Sitio de Corro Maita, featuring one of the most impressive aboriginal burial sites in the country.
La Hacienda, Arenas Nuevas, La Laguna, Bucanero, Carabela, La Niña, La Terraza, Conuco de Mongo Viña and Acuario Cayo Naranjo (the latter are in Bahía de Naranjo), La Iguana (in Cayo Saetía, Mayarí) and Atabey, Las Arcadas, El Cayuelo, Rincón Criollo y Galileo (in Banes).
