Blessed by nature, the province of Granma shows off the mountainous chain of Sierra Maestra, where the Turquino, the highest peak in the country and the Cauto River, Cuba’s largest, are located. Granma is one of the eastern provinces with more historical background. Bayamo is the provincial capital city and has been declared as Monument City for its heroic role during the independence wars in 1868. It was also in this province, in Dos Rios, where Cauto and Contramaestre rivers meet that Jose Marti, Cuba’s National Hero, was killed in combat by the Spanish army on May 20, 1895.
Located 733 kilometres east of Havana, Bayamos is Granma’s capital city and one of the most historically outstanding towns in Cuba, thus the well-deserved title of Monument City.
It was founded on November 5, 1513, being the second of the seven villages established by conquistador Diego Velazquez. Almost since its very beginnings the village stood out for its rebellious figures such as chiefs Hatuey and Guama.
