Bayamo was also the hometown of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, who initiated the Ten Years War against colonial Spain on October 10, 1868. Pedro Figueredo, the composer of Cuba’s National Anthem, and the relevant intellectual Jose Antonio Saco were also born here.
In January 1869 Spanish forces besieged the city but the inhabitants preferred to set the town in fire and leave to the countryside before the assailants took the city.
In more recent times, on July 26 1953 another heroic feat took place when young rebels belonging to the Movement 26 de Julio assaulted the Headquarters of the army in an attempt to overthrow Batista’s dictatorship.
Bayamo has also inspired one of Cuba’s better-known musical themes: La Bayamesa.
Visitors should not miss the Provincial Museum, with history, archaeology and natural science exhibitions, the Birth House of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, the Cathedral, the Parrish of San Salvador de Bayamo, the Anthem Square, the Plaza de la Revolucion, the Window of Luz Vazquez and the House of Cuban Nationality.
