At the east of the Island, Santiago de Cuba shares with Granma the priceless landscape of Sierra Maestra.
Many are the natural wonders of this region including the national park of Baconao, awarded by UNESCO as World Biosphere Reserve. The park’s highlight is the Lagoon of Baconao into which the same-named river flows on its way to the sea, allowing a natural flow of fresh and sea water in and out the fabulous lagoon.
Besides the heroic city of Santiago de Cuba, provincial capital, and for many the most charismatic and distinct city in the Caribbean, the province has other well-known attractions such as the Sanctuary to the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre, Cuba’s patron saint, the beaches of Siboney, Juragua, Daiquiri, Verraco, Costa Morena, Bucanero, Sigua and Cazonal. Further west from the capital one finds other beaches: Mar Verde, Buey Cabon, Caleton Blanco and El Frances.
