The eastern most of Cuba’s provinces, Guantanamo is also the most mountainous. Chains of mountains where coffee and cacao are grown cover almost 70% of its territory.
Guantanamo Bay is an American military naval base in the southern tip of this province. This land went to American hands, as a result of a controversial treaty signed in 1901, known as the Platt Treaty. The Cuban government is questioning the legality of this usurpation.
On the northern coast though one can visit the Natural Park named after Alexander von Humboldt, an eminent XIX century German scientist who studied Cuba’s flora and fauna. In 2001 UNESCO gave this park the title of World Heritage for the exceptionally well-preserved natural habitats combining mountains, rivers, waterfalls and forests in a rainy and fresh environment.
