Foreign visitors might find it confusing that Havana City and Havana are two different provinces: the former is the capital city of Cuba, the latter, also known as “Countryside Havana” is an agricultural belt that surrounds the capital and contains many rural towns such as Güines, Güira de Melena, San Nicolás, San Antonio de los Baños, Guanajuay, Artemisa, San José de las Lajas, Bauta, Bejucal, Santiago de las Vegas, Batabanó and Mariel. The total surface of Havana Province is 5.731 km2.
It is precisely in theses rural surroundings, traversed by Ariguanabo River, that farmers grow the produce that gets sent to the nearby capital city. The Palma Real, Cuban national tree, reigns over this land like a proud queen.
Amongst the places of interest in the Province of Havana, it is worth mentioning Jibacoa Beach with teeming, well-preserved marine life and vegetation. Only 30 kilometres away from the International Airport Jose Marti, we find El Salado with excellent diving facilities and the largest rum factory in Latin America located in the fishing town Santa Cruz del Norte, where all varieties of Havana Club rum are distilled.
San Antonio de los Baños is the known as the most humorous community in Cuba for it is there where the Comedy Festival takes place each year in memory of Marcos Behemaras, a native comedian. San Antonio’s international school of cinema and television has been the alma mater for many Latin American movie directors, including the Benito Zambrano, from Spain. San Antonio is also the hometown of famous Cuban singer and composer Silvio Rodriguez.
