Cuba’s second largest island, next only to the main island, Isle of Youth has been known in history as the Isle of Pines, the Isle of Parrots, the Treasure’s Isle and the Devil’s Isle. In 1978 after the celebration in Cuba of an international festival for students and youths, the island was renamed as Isle of Youth.
Located in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, southeast of the main island of Cuba, Isle of Youth is a major tourist destination for its many beaches, diving sites ranked as some of the most beautiful in the world and the peculiar Bibijagua Beach, whose black sands are the result of the erosion of black marble. Bibijagua Beach is only 9 km away from the isle’s capital city, Nueva Gerona.
In close proximity to the Isle of Youth, Cayo Largo is a true Caribbean jewel: crystal clear waters, awe striking coral reefs, fine sandy beaches such as Sirena Beach, Blanca Beach, Los Cocos Beach, Tortuga Beach and Luna Beach. This tiny key (25 km long by 7 km wide) is the ideal destination for those interested in high fishing, diving, sailing and water biking.
Flights from Havana to Nueva Gerona (Isle of Youth) land in the local airport “Rafael Perez”. There are also ferry services from the main island.
Cayo Largo has the international airport “Vilo Acuna”. A number of flights are available from different locations such as Havana, Varadero, Isle of Youth and Pinar del Rio. As a tourist attraction you can take a plane or a chopper to explore from the air other small isles and keys belonging to the Canarreo Archipelago.
