Even though historians do not completely agree, the most spread out thesis about the origin of the name of Matanzas (Slaughter) indicates that this province was named after a slaughter of Spaniards perpetrated by aboriginals during the first years of exploration and conquest of the Island.
This is a land of exuberant beauty, blessed with world-renowned sites such as Varadero Beach, Yumuri Valley, Bellamar Caves, the City of Matanzas and the Zapata Swamps, the largest wetland in the Caribbean Sea.
Less known but not for it less beautiful we have the beach known by Long Beach (Playa Larga) in the south of the province (Varadero and Cardenas are in the North of the province).
