Located right in the middle of the Island, this province thrives with natural wonders and historical heritage: beautiful and exuberant valleys, isolated beaches and many exponents of the colonial architecture are to be seen in the capital city named Sancti Spiritus and in the more famous town of Trinidad.
Nature has been generous with this province: nearby Trinidad we find the Escambray Sierra featuring the breath taking landscapes of Topes de Collantes with its 654 metres high waterfall in the Caburni river. The Valley of the Ingenios (Sugar cane factories) and the translucent Ancon Beach are highlights of this province.
Built on a land formerly occupied by old aboriginal settlements, Sancti Spíritus was one of the original seven Cubans villages founded by the Spanish conquistador Diego Velazquez in 1514. The colonial splendour reflected in its buildings and street layout is very much alive today.
